The beautiful plantings and art covering the graceful grounds at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens flow downhill toward the shore of White Rock Lake. Many fun events sprinkle the gardens’ calendar, including cooking classes, the Garden Chef Series on Fridays, and chef demonstrations in the Charlotte and Donald Test Pavilion (the space and its kitchen garden also are available for rental).

While focusing on a solid classical calendar, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra occasionally delves into popular culture. Case in point: The 2025-’26 season will open in September with “Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix in Concert,” with the orchestra playing along with the fifth film in the franchise.

Red-leather booths lit by a riot of chandeliers set the tone at Town Hearth. The well-dressed staff knows all about the menu’s serious list of steaks, and its nifty takes on favorite comfort foods, such as the meatballs (above) and the BLT Mac (bacon, lobster, truffle oil). Dig in, happily.

Just a year old, Goodwins, with a neighborhood vibe, is fast becoming a favorite with all visitors to the Big D. The menu is just plain fun, featuring cheese beignets for an appetizer; lots of delicious salads, like the kale crunch with toasted honey vinaigrette; and innovative mains, such as English pea and potato pierogies.
